Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency will start selling Rs 1,716 crore worth of taxfree bonds from Friday. IREDA bonds offer rates of 7.53%, 7.74% and 7.68% across maturities of 10-15-20 years. The core issue size is Rs 1,000 crore with an option to retain oversubscription up to Rs 1,716 crore. Bonds will be listed on stock exchanges. Out of the seven companies, IREDA is the sixth issuer and the last one will be Hudco. The companies will cumulatively sell a total of Rs 40,000 crore tax-free bonds this financial year ending March 30, 2016. Those securities offered tax-free interest rates in the range of 7.14-7.62% across 10-15-20 year maturities. These papers are considered as safe as bank fixed deposits, which are now yielding 6-6.70% across maturities after tax. An investor should invest for atleast 5 bonds.
